Record Night

On September 19, 2024, I teamed up with Bill Poznanski of the Imprints for one of the 30-minute guest DJ spots on Record Night at the Smiling Moose on Pittsburgh’s South Side. The Smiling Moose does this every other Thursday. Anybody can sign up and play whatever he or she wants, as long as it’s on vinyl. As it was my first time, Bill graciously let me hog the set with seven 45s before he finished the half-hour with 45s from his cousin Linda’s collection. Thanks also to Bill for operating the equipment, which I would have had no clue about. To me, yellow sticky notes still qualify as technology. The crowd seemed unmoved while we were up there, but a few folks stopped by my table later to say they enjoyed my set. I found the double smash burgers on special to be a big smash, too. Just don’t tell my cardiologist. I hope to participate in further Record Nights and will add to this page as I do so.

Joe's Set
The Infidels – “Mad About That Girl.” Youngstown band that I was happy to see live for the first time in November 2022.
Blotto – “When the Second Feature Starts.” A long-time favorite I remember hearing many times on Harry Wagner’s WYEP show.
Holly & the Italians – “Tell That Girl to Shut Up.” I believe this was the first punk record I ever bought.
The Imprints – “Secretary’s Tune.” I was pleased when Bill said he wouldn’t be weirded out if I chose this one.
Dress Up As Natives – “Had to Be There.” How did I miss out on one of those cool picture sleeves when I bought this?
The Leonards – “Thinking About It.” I prefer the B-side on this one from the Detroit band.
The F Models – “It’s Not Right.” Another B-side and a good way to close out the set from this Akron/Kent band who were friends of the Pittsburgh scene.

Bill’s Set
Jimmie Heap & His Orchestra – “Gismo.” Bill calls it "the Cousin Linda's Records' theme song." It's always his set starter.
Lou Rawls – “Dead End Street Monologue”
Al Wilson – “The Snake”
The Turtles – “Buzzsaw”
